You're welcome! Today's trivia tidbit… Calvin was originally conceived as a side-character for a proposed cartoon strip called "Critturs" that Watterson pitched. The proto-Calvin was named Marvin although his stuffed tiger was named Hobbes. Although Critturs was rejected, the feedback suggested Marvin and Hobbes were the strongest characters. Watterson took the feedback to heart and developed the characters into their own strip. The change of name for Calvin came because there was already a cartoon character named Marvin.
You'll notice Calvin's trademark messy hair was hanging in his eyes. Spiking the hair up gave Watterson the ability to give Calvin emotionally expressive eyes.1 -
