So I did the scoobys calculator and there is a HUGE difference between what MFP says I burn, what scoobys says is burned by, and what the elliptical says, which is in the middle. Can anyone help? Feel free to ask anything else that might help with better advice. Thanks!

I just use 5 calories per minute if I'm working moderately or 10 calories per minute if I'm working super hard (drenched in sweat).

Alternatively, you can buy a heart rate monitor and taking the guessing out of it

Go with the lowest number. It's always better to err on the safe side and, if anything, you'll bank a few extra calories each week.

Elliptical? 20 mins at high resistance (16 out of 25) burns around 180 calories for me .. That's with my HRM showing an average of 150-160

(Used to burn 200 but I lost a few more pounds and got fitter)
  • Before I calculated with the Scooby's, I would always use the lower number , which was always the elliptical. I guess my question has more to do with how the terms "by" and "during" differ and why you wouldn't use both. Using the 10 cal/min rule (I have never been on the thing w/o being drenched in sweat at the end) would put me at 450 cal/min burned.
You guys recommend any RELIABLE and accurate HRM's?
  • I'd just go with the lowest number. Better safe than sorry.

The most accurate is a Heart Rate Monitor. What's a Scooby's? And it's best to err on the side of caution, if you don't have an HRM, and go with the lowest.

As everyone says, for eating back purposes, go with the lower. Your body is counting calories regardless of what you put in an app.
  • Ok, but why would I actually eat back the calories I have burned?
http://scoobysworkshop.com/accurate-calorie-calculator/ Autumn squirrel, it is a great tool for calorie intake levels, still finding out about it!
