Tracking While At School

Hey guys,
I am really trying to get back into tracking my diet again, but each time I head back to school I find it really difficult and end up stopping. I have a huge urge to maintain it this time because I want to get over the slump/plateau that I've hit. For anyone who currently attending school, what are you doing to make it easier to track your daily diet? I am not cooking my own foods yet and have been trying to eat a well-rounded diet from the dining hall. Any tips or suggestions?

Thanks!

I log all of my food for the day before I head off to work (I'm not in school anymore, but I certainly remember how crazy the schedule was!). Even if you're planning on eating your meals out or grabbing microwave meals, it helps to mentally plan ahead to make sure your calories fit in to your day.

Eyeballing is going to be your best friend in the dining hall. Most of the calorie counts I've noticed are off with university dining (like the salad bar being 1,000+ calories for one serving...that would be correct if you had a heaping spoonful of every dressing, nut, and crouton on display on top of the veggies you picked), so I tried to guesstimate.

I generally got either two small pieces of pizza (equivilant of one normal slice) and a salad, a bowl of pasta and a salad, or a sandwich and a salad. It was easy to guesstimate that way.

I usually pack my own lunch so it's easier to plan and log. Or, if this isn't an option, you can generally contact the cafeteria (via email or in person) and ask about nutritional information availability. I've never had them say they don't have it, they use packaged stuff so it's always available if you ask!

How about snapping a photo of your plate of food and then logging it in the evening? It's better than trying to "remember". I'm well out of school and smartphones didn't exist. Heck, portable cell phones didn't really exist. (Unless it was contained in a bag.) :)

I totally agree with this. Plus, you can keep a little photo album on your phone of your meals so that you can be more accountable!

Prelog your days whenever possible and adjust as you go.
