Gross Overestimation of Calories Burned with HRM

Tonight I did 45 minutes of Nike Training Camp and wore my Mio Alpha Heart Rate Monitor in order to get a more accurate idea of how many calories I burned... I'm 5'5", 27 years old, 150 lbs, and my average heart rate for the workout was
The HRM is a Mio Alpha synced to a Samsung Galaxy S4, using the BLE Heart Rate Monitor app. The app is telling me I burned 739 calories in 50 minutes! I did work my butt off and would love to believe this reading is accurate
but I know it is not.
Does anyone have experience with this equipment and suggestions for how to get a more accurate reading? Thanks in advance!

You've used the HRM for something that it's not designed for; intermittent changes in HR including both low and high HRs. I'd also note that the Mio and its ilk are very sensitive to being worn correctly and can suffer from not being tight enough.0

I usually use @heybales spreadsheet to determine how many calories to actually log from my HRM reading. Here's the link:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Amt7QBR9-c6MdGVTbGswLUUzUHNVVUlNSW9wZWloeUE#gid=14
For example:
If I plug in your calorie burn and time. It says to log 564 calories.
So far this method has worked really well for me and has me losing slightly faster than expected.0 -

This doesn't take in to account the potentially missed heart beats because of bad contact. It can be good if really strapped on tight. I've seen pictures from ones that say it's accurate - I could never wear a watch that tight to leave that much imprint.
You could do a self-test if really curious how accurate, or inaccurate, it may be.
Spreadsheet for getting cardio personal calorie burn formula:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Amt7QBR9-c6MdC10WXNweGI0ZGRNZHE4Wmc3UURaWVE&usp=sharing
And it will help get a formula for the non-steady-state aspect that makes normal HRM calculations incorrect usage for the workout as expressed in other post.
You are correct though, it will be more accurate than selecting "aerobics" from exercise database, but using the word accurate would be a stretch, better estimate is more realistic term.0 -

This. NTC workouts are primarily HIIT. HRMs don't do HIIT well0
