It isn't an insult, it's a way of judging risk to your health based on weight, ie. mortality rate for life insurance companies.
  • I agree! According to BMI calculators I should weigh 155lbs, but when I weighed 165 my mother was worried about how skinny I was and you could see my ribs. I just ignore BMI now and try to focus on getting to a weight that feels healthy (and doesn't worry my mom!)

Don't let the BMI scale annoy you, it's acknowledged that its a fairly blunt tool when it comes to measuring anything worthwhile. It's just a way of 'categorising' people that has little individual use. For instance, in the UK, most professional rugby players, who are supremely fit and healthy, would be considered obese by the BMI scale.

Consider this scenario. Imagine two twins, one who was 1 oz under the obese level, and one who was 1 oz over. One would be classed as 'healthy' and the other 'obese', yet in reality they would both be of a similar level of fitness.

Don't let it get you down and just set yourself some fitness goals that suit you and that you are happy with enjoy life!

BMI has been proved as totally out of whack. Thought up in 1930s and silly as anything. BF% is a better guage and I use a body fat scale

I'm glad I'm not going crazy. Made me feel further away from where I should be.
