Food is my enemy

Here is my issue. I hate food. I've been overweight my whole life (Not huge, but enough!) and have had to watch what I eat, count calories, etc. so much so that food has become my enemy. I don't have a favorite food. I don't like to think about food, taste it, shop for it. No "diet" books that I have found deal with this. I eat unconsciously because I have to. Does anyone else deal with this? The thought of journaling my food (which I do) drives me crazy!!!! This has also caused problems when dieting because it is easy for me not to eat rather than think about food. Because of this I have killed my metabolism. I feel like I just can't win.

It's sad that you have such an unhealthy relationship with food.

Food is delicious, and makes life more awesome. Hopefully you can talk to someone to help you with this.

I'm sorry!! I could not imagine this, cause I love food way too much. Please speak with someone about this. Not a healthy frame of mind to have at all.

I think you should seek some help with this. Food is fuel for your life not something that should be torturous.

I have known people who feel indifferent when it comes to food but never anyone who hated food. Do you just resent having to eat because you don't have a lot of control over your eating? Do you find the process of shopping, cooking, eating a waste of time?

If either of these things are true, I'd suggest bulk cooking breakfasts, lunches and dinners on Sundays. You can do something in a crockpot, something in the oven and a stovetop meal. Portion out into containers for the whole week. And then don't worry about it.

    Would that help?

This might be something best taken up with a professional. A doctor, dietitian, or therapist might be able to help.

I am sorry you have that thought about food.

I don't have that issue. I see it as fuel for my body and training and workouts.

I will agree with this. I do this every Sunday. Sunday is my long run and cooking day. I love it!

Maybe MFP is not for you. If I were in your shoes I would find a way to romance food again. Slowly, cautiously. A counselor familiar with eating issues might help. Group counselling might be more affordable.

this is just as unhealthy a view of food as considering yourself addicted to it. I would love to see you make the changes you want, but I think it all starts with your brain and your whole mindset, so maybe talking to a counselor would give you the advantage you need to succeed!

    Best of luck!

I think only a professional is going to help you work through your unhealthy relationship with food.

A few years ago, I was looking into lap-band surgery, and two really important things they did was require me to meet regularly with their bariatric nutritionist, and then meet with a therapist who recommended someone (another therapist) for me to see. That was in 2011. I still haven't had the lap-band surgery, but I still go to the therapist, still follow the directions I was given from the nutritionist.

Like you, I always hated to journal my food - so both food and the journal had a very negative connotation for me. I felt like no matter what combination of food I ate, I was never going to lose weight. Going to the nutritionist and the therapist, and applying the concepts we talked about were a monster help. I'm 75 pounds down from my highest weight, and now back on track again. I think this is the first year I've made a New Year's Resolution to do something about my weight and meant it! LOL

Anyway - I would suggest getting help to redefine your relationship with food.

OP - it sounds like you need to speak with a professional about your relationship with food. Food is not your enemy ...Food is necessary to fuel your body and is something that should be enjoyed, not loathed....

You might want to get to a mental health professional.

Sorry OP, I have no advice either. I'm still trying to understand the concept of "hating" food yet being overweight. Are there any foods you enjoy? Certain flavors or textures? Are you on any medication that would numb your taste buds or sense of smell? Also, how long has this negative attitude towards food been going on? Did it start or get worse after you started logging everything?

It sounds to me like the OP is in love with food, but hates watching what she eats. If I didn't care what ate, I would buy some frozen vegetables and some stew meat every week, dump it into a Crock-pot and eat it at every meal. Once you knew how many calories is was, you could just figure out a portion size that matched your goals and you wouldn't have to think about it after that.

I actually had a friend who did something like that. He would eat exactly the same thing every single day. I found it rather disturbing, but he seemed to like doing it.

If you hate food and taste is not a consideration, why not eat the healthiest stuff out there? You can almost eat as much healthy salad and veggies you want and you'd probably still lose significant weight

I agree about getting help, that sounds miserable, and I can certainly understand how one gets to that point.

But also..do you exercise? I know that without exercise, the amount I can eat without gaining weight is pretty small. And especially without regular exercise, as my muscle vanishes THAT is what actually hurts metabolism. I would really recommend that you start a solid fitness program, boost your BMR and stop "dieting". Remember that food is the fuel which builds your muscles and neurons, it's not a friend or an enemy. I find that part is really easy to forget when I'm not challenging myself physically.

I wish you all the best!!

I am so confused. It sounds like you hate food and want nothing to do with it. However, you've eaten enough to be overweight. Do you see why I find this a contradiction?

You also say you eat "unconsciously." I know you're not actually unconscious, but what do you mean? You grab a bag of chips and eat while watching TV or working and don't pay attention to how much you eat?

Then "unconsciously" is followed by, "because I have to." Why do you have to?

To answer your question, No, I don't hate food. I like food. I like food I eat, food I avoid eating and some food that I'm allergic to. I like food categories, recipes, cooking and I'm starting to like watching cooking shows. I even like pictures of food. I have my issues with it, but in like it!
