Boosting iron intake - vegetarian on a budget!

Options
Hi,

I have chronically low iron and regularly take treatment doses of ferrous sulphate. I have found MFP really useful for showing me which vitamins etc I lack in my daily diet, usually my real low is iron.

I am vegetarian, have been for more than 15 years now, but my iron levels were low even when I ate meat. I enjoy cooking and trying new foods, but I am on a reasonably tight budget so often limited by Aldi's range!

Does anyone have any tips for naturally boosting iron intake? Or any iron-rich recipes?

Spinach actually isn't good in iron! There was a decimal place error that has been perpetuated by a popular misconception!! But eat your spinach cause it's yummy!!

I think broccoli? And veggie meat. One of the problems is that plant based iron isn't as bio available as meat based. So eat more than you think.

Also, trader joes soy protein powder, 1 serving has 82% of your daily iron in under 200calories.

Spirulina. It's one of the only things I don't buy at Aldis.

Total cereal, it goes by the name "bran flakes" in store brand generics. I also take a chewable multi with iron, flintstones kids brand. My doctor says eating a orange, grapefruit or drinking a glass of OJ is helpful when eating fortified iron foods.

Use cast iron cookware. You could probably get some cheap at a garage sale or camping shop.
