Vitamins and nail health

Lately my fingernails have been bending back (ouch!) way more than they ever have before and my toenails are all cracked. At first I was paranoid I had some kind of fungus but that was ruled out by a physician who said it was trauma to the nail. Now I think I must just not be getting enough of some vitamin that is making my nails weak, since I haven't had any memorable trauma and don't wear pointed or too-tight shoes. Any suggestions on what I should be taking both in pill or food form? I'm guessing one of the factors is iron, since I've been low on that for as long as I can remember. Feel free to look at my diary.

I've heard biotin is good for hair and nail growth. Ive never taken it myself but the vet put my dog on it when she was losing her fur. She now has beautiful white fur that shines0
