Weight training with arthritic knees

I've been diagnosed with arthritic knees and will be needing knee replacement surgery within 5 years. I was told to give up running and not allowed to do any squats with weight. All the weight training programs I am looking at have squats. Does anyone know of a good, beginners weight training program without any lifting that would hurt the knees? Also, I have had help from fitness instructors with my form and it is still painful.
