So I'm finding that with my food diary, I'm usually high in sodium and carbs, but low in protein. Anyone have an suggestions for something I can add for a snack that's high in protein but low in salt and carbs?
I live in a rural area so it's usually very hard to find what would typically be considered gourmet or exotic foods, especially produce.

When I was high in sodium and carbs it was because I was eating a lot of processed foods. When I started cooking for myself, those numbers came down. To keep my protein up (I am admonished to do so!) I have protein with every meal, every snack.
This could be a hard-boiled egg, hummus (easy to make your own with chickpeas), peanut butter, nuts of all kinds, and low-fat cheese. Many of these have salt too but like I say, if you cut some of your processed food choices the salt should drop.
At your main meal, up the protein slightly and cut the carbs a little.0 -
soy beans have high protein (you normally can find them in the frozen section and you can heat it up the microwave) i love hummus. the store bought kind can normally have quite a bit of sodium, but that can be solved by making your own and controlling how much salt you actually put it (it chickpeas) boiled eggs are really great option, and it is something that i enjoy as a snack. i also love greek yogurt but i get the plain kind and add in my own fruits since the premixed can have a lot of sugar!0

Thank you! I've been thinking about giving hummus a try lately when I saw how easy it was to make. But isn't it usually eaten on crackers? I have a bad habit of just grabbing a handful of crackers for a snack and I'm fairly certain that's where a lot of my sodium is coming from.
I'm also very guilty of eating processed foods. My husband and I are both very busy and (being newlyweds) broke, so we usually eat the fastest and cheapest option when we can find, which is almost always processed foods.
I look forward to making some hummus! I think I'll try a garlic variety (I'm a garlic fiend!) to add some flavor.0 -

Boiled eggs are my life line. If I need to stay full for awhile they do the trick everytime.0 -
Have your hummus on carrot sticks, snap peas, or sliced bell peppers. Still technically carbs but no salt and lower cal than crackers.
Eggs are a good option - I like to scramble a couple with tons of vegetables.0 -
hummus and veggies are my favorite! no need crackers!0

Thanks for the advice all! I'm going grocery shopping tonight and I'm going to make my first hummus. Wish me luck!0
