Hello! I am currently 267 pounds and 5 foot 11 inches tall. This is the biggest I have ever been and it's time to get fit once again. My goal is to get not only strong but also to be able to run 5k and 10k runs at a good pace. I have a goal weight of anywhere from 180-200. I will like to slim down however still not be "skinny". I have been in shape before but always start to slow down or completely stop working out eventually and lose all the hard work I put in for the last X amount of month. Im looking for someone experienced that can coach/guide me along the way to losing at least 60 pounds this year. This might sound like a new years resolution post but I assure you this is the last time I plan on going through this hard transition from FAT to FIT. All advice and plans are welcome. Thank You!

  • Sounds like you`ve done it before and know what to do - Choose a workout that`s right for you - one that you enjoy and will not see as a chore - I prefer group activities - running, spinning, circuit training in a class etc. as it makes it a social event as well as a workout. but that`s just what works for me.
    - Count every thing you eat, no matter how small. I started this 10 days ago and it`s the first time I`ve ever tried to monitor my eating and its made me realise how just a few little extras - a couple of coookies and a slice of toast and the days total is blown away.
    - You need a goal to work towards, have you chosen a 5k, 10k event and a challenging but achievable target pace to do it in - you need this to measure your achievement and be able to say "Yes, I did it!", Otherwise its just a vague idea - believe me I`ve done 3 marathons with no particular training plan or goal other than a day out and i`ve felt no sense of satisfaction or achievement from any of them - other than "that was a nice day out".
    - Think as well about what you`re going to do once you get down to 180, if you`ve got fit you need to have an activity built into your life that you`re going to continue - for me joining a running club meant 2-3 times a week I went out with friends for a social event which just happened to be keeping us fit as well

Thanks for the awsome advice! I will make sure to count everything! My goal is to eventually be able to do a Spartan Race Beast. I completed a Spartan Sprint (only 5k) race last year and it was REALLY hard and that was a eye opener that I NEED to make a change. As for what I want to do once I get to my goal weight is still up in the air. I feel like this is the most essential because I have a horrible habit of relaxing once I make it to my goal and losing all of my hard work to laziness.

I agree with the previous poster about having a real goal...like registering for another 5k race; but, with respect to target pace, I recommend that you just try to equal or to improve your previous time; i.e., set a new PR (personal record; aka, PB or personal best). Best wishes for meeting your goals. As an old timer, I've learned that everything in life is a process, just part of the journey--make the best of it!

Thanks alot! I will definitely take all this into consideration. It will be much more realistic to sign up for a sprint again and try and beat my old time. One step at a time!
