properly taking measurements

If I want to take an accurate measurement of my waist, should I be measuring at the belly button, or at the widest part of my waist?

According to what I've read, women should measure the widest part, usually around midway between the belly button and the ribs. Men however should measure at the navel. I have no idea why...

I measure at smallest part as that is what I take to be my waist - as it gets wider its moving towards the hips isn't it?

At the smallest part. For me, it's about an inch and a half above my navel.

Definitely the smallest point, usually where you bend naturally.

If you look at seamstress sites for instructions, they giove you a tip:

bend forward and where you bend is where you measure your waist. it will end up being between your ribs and your naval. Hips is at the widest part.

Keep your thumb under the measuring tape so not to make it too taunt. I found this website useful...

Waist is the smallest part (usually). Abdomen is at the navel.

Measure at the narrowest (natural waist).

This, but I also measure around the navel, hips/butt, upper arms, thighs, calves, ankles, under bust, full bust, and neck too. I like having many different points to measure. It seems like when I only measured my waist I'd see no change, but then realize my bra band was riding up in the back and found I'd lost 2" around the ribcage! I'd prefer my waist to shrink, but it does make me happy when my thigh is .25" narrower or my wrist went down from 7.25 to 7".

I measure at my natural waist, at my belly button and around my hips. I think these three measurements together give me the clearest picture.
