Better for you alcoholic drinks?

Over the next two weekends I have a bachelorette party and a wedding with an open bar. I know that alcohol tends to be nothing more than empty calories, but I find it hard to be in that type of a setting and only settle for water. Anybody have any suggestions of alcoholic drinks that are better than most calorie wise or any other tips to make it through these types of occasions?

I usually just drink mine up. If there's good vodka or scotch :)

When I'm trying to watch what I'm drinking, I tend to go for the Vodka and 7Up/Gingerale. A good thing to keep in mind is to try and stick to the lighter coloured mixes (e.g., 7up, Gingerale, Tonic, etc.). There will still be sugar and empty calories but not quite as much. Light beers if it's an option are not a bad choice either. A glass of red wine with dinner is good too!

Don't stress too much about it though, enjoy it! :) You can also go to the gym/workout a bit before these events to help offset it if it'll make you feel better too. That's what I intend to do before the weddings I'm attending this summer :)

2 drinks a week is good for the body. My dr is always encouraging me to drink wine but I'm a rum drinker, and my drink of choice is a rum and coke or rum with Fresca. I've tried mixing it up with some pomegranate juice, seltzer and vodka. I like mimosas and champagne too.

Will there be a blender at any of the parties? Maybe you want a margarita or pina colada. If they use real juice, you will get osme nutrition at least.

If you want a low calorie drink then have something like vodka and slimline tonic or diet coke.

I rarely go out drinking these days (I have 2 young kids) so when I do I just drink what I fancy!

I third this notion. "Whiskey/bourbon on the rocks with a splash of water"

Those are both FUN occasions and you should thoroughly enjoy yourself. With that said you don't want to go "overboard" with the sugary drinks as well and all the delicious food that will be around. If I was in your situation I would:

    1. Make sure I get a killer workout in the day of the event, just to have that extra calorie cushion.
    2. Save the majority of my caloric intake for the party/later in the day.
    3. Go for light beers and/or diet soda/vodka drinks. Avoid the high sugar margaritas/cosmos/etc.

Truth is you're going to enjoy the event as you SHOULD, but don't limit yourself to the point where you are just plain miserable around all your friends. Best of luck!!!

I agree that these are fun occasions so enjoy them. If you choose to have mixers try not to have the post mix as there are heaps of sugars in them. Instead get your own can or bottle. Intermittent water may also help. Have a great time.

I have a friend that drinks vodka, seltzer water and crystal light. I've never tried it but can't hurt.

two thoughts, on drinking days try to keep other carbs low and on what to drink I would say vodka with calorie-free soda-squeeze lime and lemon in it, or drink something you don't like so you don't over-do it.

It's a tough call, but what I try to do is plan it as a cheat day. Build up a calorie cushion throughout the week to take the sting out of the event. Spirits tend to be lower calories than everything else, but watch the mixers. Above all, enjoy it! If all les fails, plan to dive and then everyone will be your friends in the hope that you will give them a ride home! Whatever happens, one day of excess is not going to completely derail you so ENJOY!

Avoid sugary pop (including tonic, which was a surprise to me) and juice. Liquor has fewer calories than wine, which has fewer calories than beer, for a standard sized drink. I've been drinking cherry vodka with diet coke after work these days, and can't go back to a 155 calorie beer when I can have a 70 calorie vodka drink.

I like vodka or gin with club soda and a squeeze of lime when I'm away from my favourite Absolut flavoured vodkas. If that's too tart you can ask for a splash of cranberry or orange juice - at least it will be diluted by the soda.

White wine typically has less calories than red, but if you're like me you'll appreciate that red wines typically have more alcohol.
