I'm April. 29 years old, mommy to a 3 year old girl and "step mommy" to an almost 4 year old girl. I work full time and attend school online full time. I'm a Type 1 diabetic and struggling to lose 33 lbs.
This is gonna be a long story, but here it is. In 2003, I was diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic through routine blood work. I was told I was definitely a Type 2 because I was overweight (198 lbs) and 18 (legally an adult) and only persons under 18 got Type 1. I took prescription diet pills for the first six months after diagnosis (not realizing the side effects they would have on my body) and dropped 50 lbs. almost instantly. I've kept some of that off.
In August I started seeing a new endocrinologist who decided to do a diabetic type test because nothing I was taking (oral medications) had worked since diagnosis and my A1C had only been manageable when switched to insulin during my pregnancy. It came back that I was Type 1 and was put on insulin only. After my A1C returned to normal, I started gaining weight and it was only when I had gained 40 lbs that I realized I needed to work on weight loss to have a healthier life and decrease the amount of insulin I'm on. My endo says that the weight gain was normal because when I was on the wrong medications, nothing I ate was being absorbed and my body was discarding all food as waste... now that my body is using the food, I was eating the same but gaining weight from it.
So a week ago I started my journey on MFP and have lost 1.5 lbs as well as noticed a change in my insulin needs. I think this will be my home until I've lost the 33 lbs gained and can feel confident in maintaining it.
I just need some friends to hold me accountable.
