Getting a workout partner.

I have never been in the best shape in my life since the time I spent in Germany 1989-1995, in the military lifting at the local gym with a workout partner, and have never had a partner since. 20 years after leaving the military and 100 lbs of fat later, I'm now searching for someone I can lift weights with again. How do I begin? Do I search for someone on the gym floor with the same body type as me (overweight and out of shape)? How do I approach someone I don't know on the gym floor and ask if they would like to "partner" up without sounding like a goof? Should I ask the manager/owner if they have any cork-board they could put up so members can pin messages to like "Looking for Workout Partner"? Does that even work? I even thought to ask the manager/owner for permission to create a 1000 lb club, so we could have some like minded members I could get to know and lift with.
