Creating calorie deficit

I don't mean to be a moron, but the whole TDEE thing is new to me. If my TDEE is 2038 and I eat 1400 cals a day, do I subtract that from the TDEE to get the daily calorie deficit?
Again, apologize for the stupidity.

If your TDEE is 2038 and you eat 1400 calories a day, then your daily deficit is about 638 calories (2038 minus 1400) which should allow you to lose about 1.25 pounds per week.
But I think it's important to note that TDEE calculators are just estimates. You may need to do some trial and error to get into your sweet spot for weight loss.0
