Lifting weights with herniated disc?

I have a bulging disc (either L-4 or L-5). I am a runner, generally 2-4 mile runs 4 days a week. I want to start lifting weights also. I am 5 feet and 100 pounds and want to gain muscle and lose the fat. Almost all weight lifting exercises irritate my lower back, it seems like theres nothing i can do that wont make the condition worse.
If anyone has any tips on weight lifting with a bulging disc it would be appreciated. (either exercises to try out, or ones to avoid) or any other tips about gaining muscle that is a safer way for my back than lifting weights! Any kind, helpful comments would be much appreciated!
