I have a "worst movie you've ever seen thread". Flip side.... what is the best movie you have seen that you cannot understand why it wasn't more popular or get the credit you thought it deserved.
I'll start with two (and a half):
1) State and Main. incredible cast and I LOVE Mamet. Can watch this movie over and over
2) The Way, Way Back. Another great cast, and Carell as a jerk of a "step-dad" was a role I didn't expect from him... but he was great
2.5) Glengarry Glen Ross. This has a big following in certain circles, but thought it should be more widely known/acclaimed.

Honestly I am not sure because most of the truly "excellent" movies that are underrated in my opinion, do have at least a cult following, and some critical acclaim.
So I'll take this in a bit of a different direction with some chick flicks that I personally like better than a lot of the really popular/well loved chick flicks out there...
