Losing inches

I often read in magazines, or see on TV, people who claim to lose 20-30 inches. How is that number calculated? For instance, I lost 3 inches on my waist, 1 inch on my thighs, 1 inch on my calf and 1 1/4 inches on my hips. Do I add all of these together to say I lost 6.25 inches? Or are these people losing 20 inches all in their waist?
