    Actually I did start with trying to find my heaviest weight possible on bench that I could do 3x10. I did not start HIIT though for cardio.

    Why?

    Because it burns more fat than low intensity steady state cardio and isn't as dangerous as jumping into heavy weights unprepared. The risk:benefit ratio is in the favor of the client.

    I remember reading somewhere that people should be able to squat 1.5 BW before HIIT. They were wrong but having stronger legs can be a way to push HIIT a little harder.
