Deep Frying

How would I calculate a deep fried food? For instance, I'm making tostadas tonight and I fry my own tortillas. Getting the calories for the tortillas is easy enough, but how do I calcualte the oil they're fried in?

Measure the oil before and after you fry the tortilla.

Mark them as tortilla chips or something similar. Or just guesstimate. Measuring the oil isn't much better, unless you account for all the oil that you drain off the fried food.

Unless this is something that you eat on a daily basis, I really wouldn't bother trying to be really scientific about it. Just use something similar to mark it.

It's probably easiest to guess, using an existing entry that looks pretty close.

If you wanted to be a little more scientific about it, you could do something like this:

    1. Weigh your tortillas.
    2. Fry your tortillas and set them on a paper towel to soak up extra oil.
    3. Weigh them again. The difference is theoretically the weight of the oil.

There is a little uncertainty because you don't know if some water content was lost in the frying process, but I can't really think of a better way to do it without overkill.
