salt for hydration during runs

I read something about salt helping to keep you from getting dehyrated during runs at some point. Something about salt packets at races and having soup before or after? Does anyone do any of this and what do you do? Do you eat the soup or other salty meal right before, right after or the day before? and what about the packets?

I use SCaps occassionally. http://www.succeedscaps.com/products/s_caps/
If you are eating properly then you probably would only need to use them during long runs and long races (if at all).0
