Hi,
OK I am new to the gym. I am ok to use the cardio equipment and go to classes but I think I should be doing some weights, is that correct? If so how do you start?
Any help is appreciated!

yes, you should be lifting free weights.

Look into a good beginner program like 5x5, strong lifts, etc, and pick a program and stick with it. I would also suggest learning proper form for the moves before starting, and whatever progam you pick make sure that it is build around compound movements- squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead presses, etc...

I just got one of the staff to give me an orientation of the equipment (booked at a time convenient for me), and then surfed around for advice on setting reps, sets and weights. It meant that I was up and running immediately rather than wandering aimlessly around the equipment and trying to figure out how the equipment I wanted to use actually worked.

When I'm ready to do compound lifts, I'll ask them to give me an orientation of that equipment too, and use the same approach (I like to do my own research into this stuff). I find paying for one session to check my form is OK is worth it in the long term.
