If you follow this diet or know this doctor I would like to be MFP friends. I just finished one of his books. Thanks.

  • I haven't read the book but I personally know two people who have done the diet through his "diet centres". Both lost a ton of weight quickly, but had to take weekly injections, their hair fell out, and they were absolutely miserable the entire time. Both gained back every single pound and then some because they couldn't maintain the strict diet nor pay the monthly fees. This seems to be a pretty standard story.

Sorry, not to rain on your parade, but I have not heard anything positive.

Thanks. I personally know two people who are very happy on the diet for a few years.

I've not read the book either, but I'm aware of some of his suggestions. I'm a type 1 diabetic as well as Dr. Bernstein, and so his ideology (intended for type 1 diabetics) is discussed in a lot of groups that I'm a part of. The low carb thing makes sense to me for diabetics because of the timing issues we have with insulin and glucose absorption. I'm not saying it is mandatory for diabetics, but it can clearly help stabilize blood sugars. If you do not have type 1 diabetes, and you make your own insulin and your own amylin, then I don't see the benefits.
