Fitbit - does the location of the device alter your number of steps and thus calories burned?

I have the Fitbit Ultra and my holster recently broke. I used to wear it underneath tops but since I don't have a holster for it, I now tuck the device into my sock. It seems that lately my calories burned has been higher than before but nothing in my day to day activities has changed.

Does it make a difference where you wear it? I don't know if wearing it on top meant it wasn't accurately capturing all my steps and now it is or if it is now attributing all movement to "steps", i.e. I do a lot of stationary exercise (squats or lifting handweights) that I don't record as exercise but there may be just enough movement to count that as a "step"? ???

Thank you.

Yes, it matters. Yours is designed to be worn on the torso. Wearing it on your ankle will greatly overestimate your activity. At least tuck it in a bra or a pants pocket, if you can.

It sounds like you have a One or Zip, not an Ultra. The Ultra is u-shaped and doesn't need a holster to clip on your clothes.

If yours is less than a year old and you bought it from an authorized retailer, Fitbit will replace your holder free usually.

+1. The instructions outline where it will accurately measure activity.
