my first plateau

i have been "dieting" for 6 1/2 weeks now. i lost 27 lbs over the first six weeks. i met with my nutritionist last week and she told me i should be consuming more calories and exercising more. since then i begrudgingly bumped up my calories a little and have been riding a stationary bike for half an hour a day plus i bought a bike and am working on riding it more, although my butt is hurting a bit from it. i am doing great with my proteins, fiber, water, etc everyday. however, in the last 5 days my weight has actually nudged up a half pound.. i realize this is most likely only temporary and need to just stay the course, but after watching the scale go down consistently its a bit of a letdown. also, i did finish up a job that required a fair amount of walking at the same time, and maybe i haven't actually increased my daily activity because of that, even with the half hour on the stationary bike.

increasing exercise (or starting a new exercise program) can cause a temporary stall, mix that with slightly higher calorie consumption, and there you have it. Your first notion was right I believe, stay the course, you'll most likely resume the losses soon enough.
  • One week isn't a plateau.
Wait two or three weeks (at least) before becoming concerned. I'm set at loosing 1 pound a week. Sometimes, I weigh the same for 3 weeks in a row, then loose 3 pounds. Other weeks it's consistently 3/4-1.25 pounds per week. Sometimes I increase then decrease then increase again. It's never a straight line.
Give it time, don't panic and stay the course. If you feel you're doing everything right, stay patient and wait to see. This is a journey over time, not individual points in time.

I agree! Stay the course and you should see a loss soon enough!! I've changed so much in the last 4 weeks in my diet and exercise and haven't seen an actual loss but know it takes time. Sometimes it takes our bodies a long time to get used to it and realize this is a permanent change.

Over 4 lbs a week??!! You are a madman! That is AWESOME. Great job!!!! Us gals are jumping for joy at 2 lbs a week!

I am down 39 lbs since January. I lost a lot doing the HCG diet, but after 6 weeks on it, I hit a plateau as well.
Their solution for me was to do an all protein day. I did and it seemed to jolt me back into weight loss. They also recommended an apple day - only 7 apples - and that would help too. The apple day seemed too restricting. The protein helped tho. Also, on a side note, if you are having regular bowel movements, perhaps you may need to cut down on the fiber some. Just a thought. Or limit fiber to only in the mornings. Not after say 10am. That way your body has time to process it all before the next morning.

I also plateau'd when I started walking and rowing everyday... finally just broke that one - but I let it happen on it's own. I was developing muscles. May be the same for you. The plateau hit about week 4 of exercising... Finally gone around week 6....
    Good Luck!!

Aren't regular bowel movements a good thing?

yes! at least once a day!
  • i have been focusing on my fiber intake more recently and eating double fiber bread. strangely, it has coincided with slightly less regular #2s. also, at the same time, i cut back on my fruits. i was eating a lot of fruit and saw that it was making it impossible for me to make my sugar goals. of course, that might have effected my regularity as well. i realize there are a lot of things at play. i also fully expected a plateau, and am not really discouraged by it. just wanted to hear what people had to say... as for the rate i was losing at, because i am rather large, i dropped 13 lbs failry easily in the first two weeks and after that was dropping 3-4 per. the thing i really noticed was that just a little increase in calories per day cut way back on my hunger pangs, but i guess i am a little worried its cutting back on my weight loss, too.
  • my plateau appears to be over: i've dropped a couple of pounds in the last couple of day.
