Should I start doing more free weight exercises?

I've been working out consistently with a trainer since last summer. We do a combination of machines, bodyweight, and free weight exercises. I'm curious to try doing some of the classic free weight exercises like squats and deadlifts with barbell. (Currently I do bodyweight squats and dumbbell deadlifts.) Is there a certain level of strength I should have before moving on to those exercises, or should I just talk to my trainer about teaching me the proper form and letting me try?
I've made good progress since the summer (dropped body fat percentage from 39 to 27%, lost 20 lbs., made strength and endurance gains). The past month or so I've been at a bit of a plateau, though. (I'd love to lose another 7 or so pounds of fat, and gain some muscle; my current goal is to get my body fat below 24%.) I see plenty of women in the squat rack, so I wondered if I should give it a try.
