is anyone combining the 5:2 diet (eat normally 5 days & 'fast' eating 500 cals for 2 days) with MFP?

Yes, I am. MFP is not really set up to cope with 500 cal days, but there are ways round it. If you're not bothered about "closing" your day, just enter your food as normal. I have created a "food" of 900 cals which I add to my diary on "fast" days to take my calories over 1200. You're welcome to add me if you want support, or to see what I eat on "fast" days. Good luck.

Yes I am doing the 4;3 now after 9 months on the 5;2. Actually today is my first attempt at doing 2 back to back fasts. I broke the rules at Xmas and put on a few lbs. so Im trying to repair the damage now. I am also a big believer in low carb, and the consumption of healthy fats. I was doing great before Xmas

I've only started back on MFP + 5:2 today after a 5 month break. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure on Friday so now it's not just getting back to a size 12, it's about getting my B/P down too.

I did this for a few months and lost weight successfully, but decided it wasn't right for me long term. I think it is a good protocol for people who psychologically deal with short term extreme deprivation better than long term low level deprivation. After all, you only have to hold out one day before you can eat pretty much what you fancy.

While I was doing 5:2 I logged on my non fast days to stay within maintenance. Unless you really hate logging, and the attraction of 5:2 is only having to log two days a week, I would probably recommend that.

My old GP used the same protocol for maintenance. Whenever he noticed his weight creeping upwards he would fast one day a week.

I quit because I didn't like being preoccupied with food on my fast days.

Yup. Been at it since May 2013. 1yr of losses, 8mth of maintaining. It's my tool to success.

Set MFP to maintaince and just accept the message on your fast days. Don't restrict on the non fast days - meaning - eat around your maintaince cals on those days.
  • Yep, start today so first fast tomorrow, good luck

Just happened to see this as I was browsing some of the discussions; while I don't follow the 5:2, I know there's a group on MFP for those who do, so I'll try to find the link to post for anyone new to the site who might want to check it out... and welcome to MFP!

here's the link to just one of the groups.. you can probably find a lot more using the search feature with keywords of 5.2, fasting, intermittent, etc.

  • Yes. I've been doing it since August 2012 and MFP is helpful for fast days. I don't calorie count other days.
