There probably are some gut flora / health / weight interactions, but currently the evidence isn't good enough to allow claims to be made on product labels in the EU.

There is unfortunately no evidence to suggest that they do anything unless you have disrupted your normal gut with antibiotics, in which case they may help in healthy recolonisation and prevent illness - don't waste money on them!

I take a probiotic every day. I order them online from Puritan's Pride because they're a reputable company and they're a good value. It's definitely not a magic weight loss pill, but I want to do everything I can to encourage a healthy and effective gut. Also I was reading a study that for RNY patients, they do tend to lose more weight when taking a probiotic (I believe 20 Billion was the dose) also the patients who took the probiotic had better vitamin B 12 absorption. I didn't have RNY but I did have VSG, another bariatric procedure. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/07/090713114512.htm coincidently the probiotic used in the study were also from puritan's pride, but I'm sure any brand will be fine.
