Logging the Elliptical

So I generally vary the levels while I use the elliptical, meaning there is more resistance at some times more than others. My reps are usually only around 110 for the most part.

I find it quite unrealistic that MFP is accurately assuming I am burning as many calories as it says I am for that pace. Yes, it is very difficult for me to sustain a higher speed than 110, but I don't know how to log it. I am saving up for a heart rate monitor, but in the meantime, how do I log my elliptical time if I'm switching up my intensity (sometimes going up to level 8)?

I use a heart rate monitor which is tailored to me specifically. It says I burn more then the machines tell me.

It maybe a good idea to invest in one as it has uses beyond that one machine

Apparently the average elliptical overestimates calorie burn by 40-45%. So you could use 50% of the machine's readout, to give a little margin of error. (Assuming it is one where you can enter your weight at the beginning of the workout. The default is something like 150 or 180 pound dude, depending on the machine.)

Enter your height/weight/gender/age into the machine. Its estimate of your caloric burn is going to be far better than MFP's generic estimates because the machine also knows your speed, resistance, and incline. Add a HRM and the machine will be even more accurate.

For me, machine estimates are so close to HRM estimates that I often don't bother with a HRM on the elliptical. It took awhile to build that trust, though, and your machine may differ.
