I decided that being 120kg was probably enough for a grown man! However diets and 'lifestyle regimes' seem to basically involve stopping all the things that make me, well, me......
So, always one for a shiny new toy and a gadget, I have a Garmin Vivosmart and am starting to obsess over the number of steps I am taking. Importantly I am doing significant levels of exercise (spinning classes at least 3 times a week) but don't seem to be dropping the weight. So this 'let's call it a blog' is my way of reflecting on what real people have to do to get/stay fit whilst operating in the real world; you know, that world that has us working too hard, rushed breakfasts if at all, lunch at the desk and semi-imposed office 'fun' and social events. Not to mention not have 3 hours a day that allows a personal trainer to get me in touch with my renew inner self or similar.
My aim is to get back to 100kg whilst toning up, getting fit and still actually living a relatively normal life.
Let's see how long this lasts.....!

Hey Nick,
That a great start to getting to where you want to be. Just keep in mind that even though the results don't show up fast at first you are doing your body justice by keeping active. It takes time to have it start working in a more efficient way when we start eating better. I was 250 a year ago. A year later I am down 51 pounds.. And it has been slow but so healthy. Took about a month before I saw any loss and it was slow for the whole year, but healthier habits have set in, and once I realized I wasn't cursed in some strange way, that it was possible to get past 220 which was my plateau for years whenever I tried dieting.. I was more hopeful. Diets don't work .. Changing bad habits to better ones .. And keeping your body moving is all you need to do .. One step at a time! Ever try snowshoeing? Burns tons of calories and a great stress reliever;)
Good luck and never give up!0 -

Thanks for your comments. (Snow showing admittedly does need snow.... Just rain here in the UK!)
Day 2 involved spinning and getting into the habit of logging what I eat. The latter is not a mechanism to 'punish' myself over what goes in, but by actually doing it, even if not accurate, provides a mechanism to understand what goes in vs how much energy I expend. It turns out that I drink a lot of coffee and tea it seems and not that much water, so guess that should change.
I doubt, as you suggest, the weight will drop off instantaneously but my body shape will change rather than weight drop. Watch and wait!
Think I'll transfer this into the Blog elmt of this forum if I can work out how to do it. I'll keep the title though!

So week 3 and 4 smashed. Admittedly I am not the greatest example of the classic dieter.... Life style, work and reality does not match the utopian ideal of the standard diet profiles. Last week as an example was an early start to get a train into London so coffee on the move, with more coffee for the meeting followed by a couple of beers at lunchtime!
Noting also that I have started feeling guilty when I miss a gym session, I am getting relatively healthier, with a near 8kg weight drop and even some muscle definition on my thighs.
Motivation is a funny think - if I find that I have missed a spinning class or similar for a couple of times in the week, my mind says it is ok to miss another one and another one until suddenly you are almost 2 weeks without any phys. Similarly if I think I am going to be heavier, I find I don't weigh myself, and if I have had a week of non-healthy food, I stop logging my meals. Once you get into that rut, I have found that there is a requirement for a positive kick start to get back again. I found my self there this week due to a combination of things - work, home life and just stuff meant that gym took second place and food became quick and convenient and ultimately unhealthy.
Let's me honest though, real life has to continue. I am not a slave to the diet/health guru lifestyle where mung beans become the food of choice and I enjoy a few beers, nice wine and food that makes me full. I actually enjoy spinning too! So why bother logging? Probably because it is a subliminal mechanism of ensuring that I at least try to continue down a slightly wobbly and uneven path to a lighter body and healthier life style but whilst being in a busy real world. Do I think I am doing anything fundamentally different? I don't think I have stopped doing stuff I like, but checking back over the last few weeks, it seems I have.
As I say, motivation is a funny old thing!0 -
Keep going, it's hard work, but worth it. I am the same as yourself, busy worklife etc and I too did not want to change my life drastically that I was no longer doing the things I enjoy, as for me, that wouldn't have been sustainable.
However, by simple exercising and logging my food here I have dropped just over 16kg through using mfp and in total I am down 37kg from my initial weight of 123kg in just over a year.
Keep on keeping on0
