Anyone familiar with a groin pull?

I think I have a groin pull. It hurts to lift my leg to cross it or put on my shoe or lift it--not every minute, just during certain positions. If I "jar" it, it can go to a 10+ pain for just a few seconds...
I am 51, very out of shape with 10 to 15 more pounds to loose-Lost 12 since about 8/12. I weigh 147, should be around 135, have 3 kids, don't exercise very much.
I love to walk and I also do a weekly strength training class. I did step exercises and I think that is how I pulled it a little. I rested it for quite some time--maybe 6 weeks because I was sick with mono anyway, so rested it.
Just started the 1-mile with Leslie Sansone to do at home, baby steps, and when lifting the knee on the particular side, kind of hurts. I am curious, if I just work through it, am I doing any damage? It isn't like a hurt knee with a limp or anything...
Any advise?

If you pulled a groin, you need to rest until it is healed. Then start doing groin and hip flexor stretches before and after you work out in the future.0

You need to improve your flexibility by stretching or doing some Yoga.0

I wish my groin would get pulled a bit more often.0
