Dip in Egg or Not?

I'm making some General Tso's chicken tonight, but baking it in the oven instead of deep frying it. The recipe has you dip the chicken (which has been marinating) in some scrambled egg, toss it into a bag of spices and flour, then shake to coat. In addition, before you put it in the oven you're supposed to spray it with cooking spray.
So my question: Do I need to coat the already wet chicken in egg? Will that actually do anything, or is it just adding needless calories? I'm definitely not against eggs, but I like for there to be a purpose to the ingredients I'm using.

It helps the coating adhere to the chicken. I personally wouldn't skip it; I've been out of eggs and tried to use other things, and it never turns out well.0
