I want to add weight training to my workouts. I do most of my workouts at home since I do not have access to a gym. I want to purchase some equipment but I really don't know what items would be a good start. What items would you recommend? TIA!

Simplest complete system would be a power rack, bench, and a 300-pound Olympic barbell set. You could do strength training for the rest of your life with just that. The rack is pretty big, though, so you need quite a bit of space.

Weights cost $1-$2 per pound. Small dumbbells make for a cheap and easy beginning, but if you take to it, soon enough you'll want to invest in a more complete set.

    (I have 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 8-, 10-, 15, and 25-lb dumbbells - $73. The Powerblock Sports 9.0 is a popular and complete dumbell set costing $300. It expands to 130lbs/hand.)

I started with a set of standard dumbbell handles and plates. I got a set that came with 105# of plates on Amazon. Later, I added a bar and used the same plates. Then I added a squat rack that I got on Craigslist. I use sawhorses as safeties. They can be folded up and put away if needed. You can build bit by bit as you progress.

I'd get a bar and a set of plates and a bench with a rack...
