Your post and title contradict each other. Either flags are for the three things that Olivia claims, or they are just for spam as your title states ... pick one.

based on how people use them, they appear to be for neither

Do you guys really want the mods to remove this feature so we can be drowning in spam again? You should ONLY flag a post when it's spam. It will be removed after 5 people flag it. It's not a 'like' or 'dislike' button.

Seriously. If you think a post violates the forum rules, report it. Flagging does nothing except wasting the moderators' time. If you don't like a post, welcome to the Internet. Grow up and deal with it or close your browser.

    *rant off*

Yes it is helpful with spam. It is also useful in Abusive posts. After 5 a use flags, that particular post collapses. After 10 I believe it is completely removed.

Actually I was surprised to learn recently that the Abuse flags are meant for flagging things that are truly offensive, like pornography, something you wouldn't want your kids to walk in and see. I think that a lot of people flag posters they feel are being "abusive" to others and I think those are supposed to be reported instead as attacking/insulting other members.

@kgeyser can probably confirm or clarify if I'm misspeaking.

Then there's just the whole "flagging for the sake of flagging" which is just out of control. I was in a thread the other day and a poster whom I don't normally agree with was literally having every post flagged, even when she was saying very benign things.

I feel bad for the moderators who have to sift through all the juvenile pointless flags. I think members who abuse the flagging system, who go around stalking people they don't like just to flag them should be given a warning too!
There's a member who brags about having over 600 flags, so obviously it has no affect???

I thought the flags were also for posts that may be in violation of MFP policies, or that may be unsafe health practices? For instance if someone responds to a post and recommends a VLCD, living on juices only, or makes personal attacks, that are related to the individual and not the topic itself? Hmm. . . maybe I'm an overflagger and need to go to recovery!

In that case you report it, not flag it.

I think (and could be wrong) those should be reported, not flagged.

@Kruggeri, you are correct about the abuse flags. Here is how the points/flags/warnings system works, with explanation of how each (spam, abuse, report) should be used:

Can we build a special section for people who are asking about juicing because of Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead? Maybe a special spam button? Please?

There has been an update to the flag/report system. *Note that incorrect use of the flagging system can now result in warnings and accruing of points towards getting banned.*

    Awesome!

"Users who flag content which does not meet the criteria for a flag will be subject to warnings and points. This includes users who are flagging content due to past events gone sour, a dislike of the user, and those who are trying to incite drama, flame-bait, or are flagging to attack another user in a thread due to disagreement."

This thread caused an uptick in my flag count. LOL

I just wish there were a way to publicly decry those who are misusing the flag system - sort of a virtual public flogging... Maybe an "Inappropriate Flagger of the Day" award issued by the mods? :p

How do you know about points? I just looked and I have exactly 1 "abuse" report, but I have 1 point? What is that? No moderator has said anything to me?
