Read the book cause thats what suburban housewives do - was bored and also annoyed by the glorification of an abusive relationship. By no means am I feminist - but I would not want any of my daughters in a relationship like that.

soo you don't think men and women should have equal rights? ;)

On topic- I got to chapter 10 in the book before I stopped reading. The writing alone was just awful. :|

Warning... long rant ahead. My apologies in advance.

I tried so hard to read the first book.

    So hard.

And I think I was only rolling my eyes every 3 minutes until I reached the tampon scene. After I read that, I stopped. I just couldn't read any more. So I just threw the book across my room and washed my hands with the whole thing. And I read the Twilight series (don't judge too harshly.. I used to teach middle and high school English and I wanted to see what my students were loosing their minds over).

Honestly. "Anastasia Steele" (seriously? SERIOUSLY?!) might be the most naive woman since 1938. Of course she's a virgin. Of course she tries to put her hair in pigtails to avoid Christian's advances. Why wouldn't she? E L James is such a horrible writer, I'm sure in her brain this made as much sense as lemonade having artificial flavoring, but furniture polish being made with real lemons. Sorry. I digress.

Christian is a misogynistic, self-loathing, abusive douchelord. Apparently, his redeeming qualities are his ridiculous good looks, his money, and his private jet and his helicopter. Of course Anastasia figures that if she puts up with his controlling, possessive and condescending nature, she can eventually win over his heart as long as she gives him what he wants, when he wants, as often as he wants. Great positive message - you can change your man as long as you give in to his every whim! Woo!

The number of times Ana says "oh my" and "crap" during even the first HALF of this horrible excuse for literary-porn made me want to grab a bottle of tequila and turn reading this waste of a tree into a drinking game. However, fearing alcohol poisoning 12 pages in caused me to reconsider.

You want another reason to turn the book into proverbial toilet paper? E L James modeled Christian Grey after her husband. And while many women all over the world are dropping their panties over MOVIE Christian Grey...

    The real Christian follows...

Oh baby. I'd better start my engine and get a cold shower ready. Rawr.

I just can't. Maybe..just maybe the movie will be better than the book, but I highly doubt it. I'd rather just flip to a free site for my ... ahem... lite BDSM needs in the privacy of my own home than shell out money to watch a bunch of actors give side-long looks to each other and women in a crowded theater pant over the screen and run home to enact out their 50 Shades fantasies on unexpected and delighted husbands.

End scene. Sorry for the rant. I apparently need more coffee.

Hated that book! Seriously, the guy was creepy. And a stalker. And she whines too much.

    ^^^^^

This. I just wanted to punch both of them. Added to the really crappy writing...well, it wasn't very good as a book.

    50 inches of Grey

Also, Two minutes of Grey.... It always seemed he was 'done' in 2 minutes or less. lol.

I'm the only one of my friends and family that was not impressed by this book, at all. I only got through the first one because I kept waiting for the real action to start, and by chapter 18, I gave up.

10 of 10 will not watch.

Totally overrated book, and completely missing the point of the lifestyle. But that's just my opinion. :)

According to a very close friend who has been in the lifestyle all of her adult life, the books are way off the mark....

I got bored after the first book and ended up skipping most of the sex scenes in the next 2.

The book is total dreck. An eighth grader probably has better writing/literary skills than E.L. James.

When I kept hearing about how the book was so extreme and amazing I read it (along with the rest of the series). I was disappointed. Though the character wasn't written as a mini-van driving mommy who had never set foot off the straight and narrow... that's exactly how she came across.

The "Extreme" of that book (and the series) was so mild and repetitive that it fell far from the lifestyle it was trying to shed light on. I was saddened that is came off as annoying rather than erotic. Her repetitive "Oh My.." lifestyle makes me weep for anyone who read the books looking for something dark, twisted, naughty, or fun.

Maybe the movie will be better without Anastasia's constant inner thoughts.

MmmmK. So all the ladies around kept going on & on about this book so I gave the first one a read. Few chapters in, I realized this chick is plagiarising one of the worst books ever poorly written, "Twilight", that I was also ill advised to read. And I do mean word for word in sections. Referred to the web to discover this person is a fan fiction writer & had permission of the author. All that just to say: poorly, awfully written, don't bother if poorly written causes you to sling book across room. However, Hollywood magic might be able to turn this crapfest novel around, but chances are slim since not accurate of lifestyle (according to those who know) and not creative in any way (I mean she lifted most of it).

Love the comparison picture above. Too funny. Sorry for the honesty, OP.

My wife and I tried to read those books. I made it farther than my wife did. However, we actually lived in Portland, OR and I graduated from the college in the book that Anastasia attended. The author could have done a 5 minute google search and gotten some of the landmarks, directions, etc down but that was as far as I made it when she couldn't get those things right.

    The writing was...atrocious.

I'm astounded at its popularity though, especially considering what goes on in the book.

All of my critiques about the male and female leads in the twilight series tend to bear out with 50 Shades as well... Interesting. Take the unhealthy, weak, obsessive female lead and the abusive, unhealthy relationships in Twilight and then just extend them to the *real world* and make them worse....

Who are these people that write books about women who base their entire self-worth on a man's affection, love, and opinion? Effffff that

I think I may possibly be the only female not to have read it!

Might go and see the film though.....?!

I've not read it, either. Seems pretty tame, though.

It's fiction. I mean is it that serious. See it or don't. Not everyone has the same interests in movies or literature. As for the accuracy ummm again, its fiction.

It's arguably the first mainstream piece that explores BDSM and for those in the BDSM community, there are real concerns that their lifestyle is portrayed in a way that promotes abusive, unequal relationships. Let them express their concerns. What's it to you?

Never read it. Everyone I know that read it hated it. One friend threw it in the trash after one chapter. So, I never read it.

That was such a funny book, I tried to make myself read it, felt like it was written by a shy teenage girl. I mean who calls their privates. Sex? Lol
And on top on that the sex scenes in the book lasted what.. One sentence? Poor performance in my opinion ha
Seriously ladies if you want something incredible to read look up literotica on the net. Or just Google sex stories. Amateurs can write better more realistic stuff than that.
I mean if that book got you in the mood and you think that was romantic or hot,,, no wonder why men can never understand women. Ha.

Funny that you mention that. It was my SAME feeling about Twilight. The movies were slightly more bearable without the pathetic internal monologue of the female lead.
