So I went and got my cholesterol checked, and everything was in good range but my triglycerides (290). My doctor wanted to put me on a medicine, but I declined. I really want to see if I can lower this on my own and naturally. I'm only 40, I don't take any other kind of medication, I'm probably about 50 lbs overweight. Does anyone have any sugesstions, on what I need to do?

I've been told that fish oil will help with this. Exercise is important, do cardio at least 30 minutes 4x/week and lift weights 2-3 times/week. High triglycerides can be a sign of insulin resistance as well.

Lower your carb intake. This would be an indicator of insulin resistance as the other poster said. There is no need to worry unless you have elevated HgA1C as well. Then you'd be pre-diabetic.

If you lay off sugars (natural as well as artificial), and cut down the other white stuff (not even subbing it with whole wheat), you will see a difference.

Start off by changing the MFP allowances of 50% of calories coming from carbs down to 35% and balance out the other calories as you will with fat and proteins. Then gradually lower that number if your Trigs don't get better. Exercising will also help this number.

Drinking alcohol can also lead to higher triglycerides - just an FYI. For a complete discussion of things you can do, the Mayo Clinic website is full of information:
