Curious - why photos in cars?

OK, this has been a nagging question in my mind for some time. To wit:

Many people have profile photos of themselves sitting in automobiles. It would seem that they are using some kind of a rear-facing windshield-mounted camera to get these shots. Often they seem to be in the driver's seat.

Why are these so common? Are you stuck in traffic? Is the lighting good there?

And why is this angle so common? Is it a cell phone doubling as a GPS and mounted on the windshield?

No criticism here, I just don't understand.

Same reason people take pictures of themselves sitting on the pooper. Because they can :)

I don't understand it either but I have a girlfriend who is addicted to doing it who says it's the lighting. I'm not a fan of it.

Best lighting I get is in the car. It's indirect but bright enough for colors to be truer to life.
I have a front facing camera so I can see myself in the screen and rest my hand on the steering wheel.
