Do I need new shoes?

So, it had been a while since I went running. I usually just go to the gym and do the elliptical or the bike so my shoes haven't had a lot of pressure on them in a while. I bought them last January. Well last night I went for a 3 mile walk/run and within an hour of returning home, I had the worst shin splints and this morning my lower back is on fire from pain. Could it be I am ready for new shoes now or because it had been a while since I ran? How often do you all change shoes?
