Super confused about number of minutes to exercise

I am a 38/f with a lot of fat to lose (currently 288). I have lost 14 pounds since starting counting, logging, and exercising at the beginning of the year. Before finding MFP I did some reading and what I found was that the amount of exercise required is really more than 3x a week for 30-45 minutes. So, I've been walking on the treadmill 60-90 minutes or a combination of walking and using the elliptical 5 or 6 days a week. I've also been doing some weightlifting 2 or 3 times a week. Now that I have read many of the posts in the Fitness and Exercise area, it seems like many people are doing much less for cardio. I am a busy girl, so if I don't need to walk 90 minutes a day that is great, but I just don't know what to believe is appropriate. Help?

Unless you're in a rush to lose weight, it's fine to do 30-45 minutes of cardio 5-6 days a week. Keep in mind your calorie output will drop, unless you increase the intensity of your cardio. A good way to do that is through intervals. Basically you alternate between short, intense bursts and recovery periods. Google HIIT to learn more.

To get the most from strength training, follow an established program, instead of doing your own thing.
