My junk on a plane.

I am flying for the first time in May. I am terrified but trying to put that aside. On top of being scared I will plummet to my death.. I have concerns about the seating. I fit into chairs at restaurants and movie theaters fine. I have never really had an issue. But I do have a serious rear and hips. I read plane seats average 17 inches. How is this possible with the variations of people flying?! Eek! Experiences? Reassurance? Thanks in advance.

I'd say they are a bit smaller than a movie seat. I'm 5'6" & was 215ish (size 16 pants) on my last flight in November. I didn't have any issues. Not sure if that helps.0

If you can opt for an isle seat I would.0

I am 5'8" and have HUGE hips, 50 inches around. I carry all of my weight there. The airplane seats for me are generally comfortable and I don't feel like I'm crowding anyone, but definitely smaller than theaters.0

My husband is 6'4" and over 350lbs. He can fit in a plane seat, although he infringes on my space.. but I just cuddle up and go to sleep anyways.0

17" is a standard seat width that was established in the 1930s when people were considerably smaller. Of course the airlines like to keep to that since it means they can pack more people in a smaller space. I fly internationally several times per year and try to avoid US carriers when I can due to the lack of knee room and I am only 6'2" with a 34" inseam. I pay extra for emergency exit or bulkhead seats when I can due to the extra leg room. As someone above mentioned, get an aisle seat if any are still available. Since this is your first flight you probably don't want to be looking out a window anyway.0
