just diagnosed with Hypothyroidism

Hi glad to see a support forum as I have lots to learn. At least I now understand all my aches and pains and why I'm struggling to control my weight. I'm looking for any advice of how to live with this and hopefully see the results with a waist again.

I have had hypothyroidism for 20 years now. I can't blame me being fat now on my thyroid. I gained 35 pounds in a month before I knew something was wrong, but I was already overweight and still am. The advice I have for you is to make sure you are being monitored by a doctor and that you take your medication each day. You will notice a difference in how you feel fairly soon. You will probably feel like a new person and will want to get around and do more because of the added energy and the decrease in pain that you feel. You might want to find out if any foods, drinks or vitamins affect the absorbsion of your medication as well. For instance, I can't drink coffee or take Vit D with my medication. I just make sure that I take it as soon as I wake up and I don't eat or drink anything other than water for at least 2 hrs after. If you start feeling like things are out of whak again get in to see your dr right away. You may need your meds tweaked a little bit. Look up the side affects of hypothyroidism. I know my medication needs upped when my voice starts sounding like a man's voice. Everyone is different. You will get to be an expert on how your body reacts in relation to your throids functionality. As far as your waist, we have to find it just like everyone else. Some say it is harder for us to lose weight, I don't know. I have never been a normal weight so I have nothing to compare it to. I know it's a struggle, but MFP has made a huge difference. I wish you the best.

Thanks for your help. Is finding out if foods affect absorbing message something your doctor helps with? I asked about foods ans was just told to eat healthy and lots of fish. I'm pretty healthy eating anyway and 90% homemade fresh food is how I have always been. I fought breast cancer in 2013 so thought the extra pounds were the caused by the homones for that. I'm glad the reasons are something I now understand. I'm trying to get to see a nutritionist I am a bit confused about some veg, for example I have seen advice eat leafy greens, avoid cruciferous very as much as possible and cook, I know cabbage, sprouts, cauliflower, kale are cruciferous but have seen spinach and watercress on both do eat and don't??? I am going to see if I can lget some guidance

Are you taking hormones post cancer? Changes in things like estrogen and progesterone can make a big difference in thyroid function, so it's important to get that balanced.

if you get meds make sure you take them daily on an empty stomach (no coffee either) an hour later you can eat. It made a huge differene for me. Yes it is a bit harder to loose weight but if you track your food and work out you will loose weight. As long as you consume less calories than you burn. Good luck you got this. Add me if you want

My weight kept creeping up every year and I couldn't explain it. It wasn't until my hair started falling out that I realized something was seriously wrong. My Family Practitioner kept telling me I was borderline, but never prescribe any meds. By the time she referred me to a specialist, my thyroid function was completely out of whack. The endocrinologist gave me two options. Surgery to completely remove my thyroid or radioactive iodine treatments to kill off the malfunctioning portion of the thyroid.

It took a long time to for the specialist to get my dosage right.

I now have alopecia totallus as a result of the hypothyroidism not being treated sooner. Weight loss is a battle for everyone, but I think it is more difficult for those that suffer with hypothyroidism. The slightest change in your daily routine can wreak havoc with your meds.

I've lost 20 lbs since Aug 2014 and my doc has decreased my Synthroid dosage 3 times.

Feel free to add me as a friend.

Thanks so much for the replies still learning how to use the forum will see if I can add friends.
It seems there are so many impacts so lots to look out for. I am on hormones because my cancer was oestrogen drive I have a monthly implant of zoladex. Interesting is that you I have started a period 12days after starting thyroxine. Maybe my thyroid has stimulated the process of oestrogen production? I will need to speak to my oncologist I think maybe it should be monitored. The consultant endocrinologist suggestef I was probably through the cancer treatment induced menopause at 49 only last week, trust me to do this a week later:-) I am starting to keep accurate records of the food I am eating and hopefully get some control over the balance. Also husband has bought me a juicer to get a fix of nutrients. I threw asparagus in it with beetroot and an orange, tasted Ok. Hope it will help but am still looking craving carbs and trying to cut back especially want toast in the morning. I didn't realise the tablets can be taken with a co

MFP has a Hypothyroidism & Hyperthyroidism group: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/753-hypothyroidism-and-hyperthyroidism

I have Hashimoto's (autoimmune thyroid disease). Thyroid meds (in my case, Synthroid & Cytomel) reduce the fatigue so I can be more active. But I lost just like everybody else—by eating fewer calories than I burned. Logging works.
