Training for a 12K and doing insanity

I'm currently training for a 12K (which I do running for about 115 minutes one day, the next day I do 60 minutes on the cross ramp machine alternating medium and high resistance, plus weight circuit, I use a HRM with chest strap to calculate calories burned). My daughter (she's 19) asked me to buy insanity max 30 for her (which I did on Thursday it should be here on Tuesday). Now my daughter is asking me to do it with her, is there an issue with doing it in addition to what I'm already doing?

Why are you running that much every day?

I should have included that Sunday is my rest day. This is the same training schedule I used when running cross country in college (which was set by our coach).

Running almost two hours multiple times per week sounds like a recipe for an injury. Most 12K plans only work up to a long run of about 7 miles, with many shorter runs (3-4 miles) during the week. For example: take a look at one of Hal Higdon's plans. http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51121/10K-Training-Guide

I appreciate the info. Honestly I really like running, and it's a great stress reliever for me. Now back to my original question, is there any issue with adding insanity to what I'm already doing?

Probably. Because there's an issue with doing any activity too much—and then adding something more on top of it.

I like running too, but I know better than to run 5+ miles multiple times per week. That's just stupidity when you're training for a race that's relatively mid-distance, if not on the shorter end. But I'm sure your college cross-country coach from 20 years ago knows what's best! LOL

I'm not sure if you intended the post to have that much snide tone or not. I'm not understanding what exactly is wrong with using something that worked great in the past and has been working perfectly fine for me in the present. I know several people who run more than I do several times a week (my older brother is one of them) who do it because they like it and aren't training for any organized race.

Hi, I've been training for a 10K and I do Insanity too. I run 7 miles (which takes me about an hour) and then I rest for 30-45 minutes before I do an hour of Insanity. I do this 2x a week. My other days I switch back and forth and either do Insanity or weights at the gym. I don't know if I would have the energy to run more and do Insanity the same day. Maybe only run a shorter distance that first day you pair it up with the Insanity just to see how it goes. Then just listen to your body and see what you can handle. Hope this helps.

Thank you! I do my running and weights in the morning, insanity (due to my daughter work schedule will be early evening). Since I don't have it yet, I don't know the "schedule" on it, if it's every other day or such then I'll do it on the days I do intervals and weights as opposed to run days.

I'm running 50+mpw and I'm not dead... WOW. Don't listen to her. There is nothing wrong with what you are doing.

To answer your original question, I would try it and see how you feel. I don't see anything wrong with that idea  Just listen to your body and don't push if you are sore. I bet it will take you a couple of weeks and you'll be totally fine!

Thank you! Honestly I still don't understand the logic behind the other response. Hell my older brother runs 7-10 miles 3 days a week and 3-5 miles 3 days a week, just for fun (well preventing beer gut probably plays a lot into it as well).

Hahaha gotta love that kind of answer!

I was honestly ticked off by that sentence: "I like running too, but I know better than to run 5+ miles multiple times per week. That's just stupidity..."

    Really? lol

Apparently we are both stupid, lmao...I didn't know that you were only suppose to run if you were training for an organized run.

I'm currently doing Insanity (just started wk 5, recovery workouts) & training for a half marathon later in the year. My current longest run is 7.5 miles. I am managing both ok so far although I'll admit I've had days when I've been totally bushed. Just see how you feel and adjust if necessary. Good luck !
