New to working out, need some help! Fitness Plan?

Hello everyone, after my recent weight gain over the past few months since summer (40lb's.....) I've began to attempt to lose all of the excess weight again, but instead I would love to gain muscle along with it. I have a fairly large structure, and don't look very good at what they call "normal" body weight for my height (6' 0"). I would like to maintain a little bit of fat with muscle, and in no way am I looking to have a body builder, super muscular physique. I was just wondering if anyone might be able to help me set up a fitness plan with the right exercises to be doing to gain muscle? I currently have a membership at LA Fitness, so I have machines and free weights to work with. I run 1 mile every day on the treadmill and i'm handling the Cardio portion of my workout, I would also like to say that the weight is mostly in my large love-handles, stomach, and thighs. I can go workout every day after school, and i'm looking for a possible alternating upper body, lower body type of deal. I've done a lot of research but there are so many exercises i'm quite overwhelmed, as I don't know which ones would help me the most? I'm almost clueless on how much to do on reps/sets as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks - Ryan
