time to relabel the paleo diet to grain free diet ...

Probably time to call a spade a spade and label the paleo diet a grain free diet and cease any justifications for it on the basis of what our ancestors ate.
Why? Studies are showing that our ancestors have been eating grasses and grains for a couple of milliion years now.
So we did not evolve sans grains.
This is a really good article (there be science in case you find that a problem)!!

LOL wow.
Eating blades of grass is not the same as a loaf of bread. We did not develop big brains on plant material.0 -
I don't eat much white bread because it tastes so bland, and instead buy multi grain bread and I sometimes buy the frozen sprouted bread. But unless you have a food allergy or sensitivity, there is absolutely no reason to take all grains out of your diet.0
-
I'm grain free because grain seems to hate me. Potatoes too. Trust me, if I could eat them I would! I'm thankful for all the paleo and grain free sites though that give me recipes for grain free food because otherwise I'd be curled up in a corner somewhere sobbing over my loss. My body apparently doesn't care about science.0

I saw this video a while ago and thought it was interesting. http://youtu.be/BMOjVYgYaG8Dr. Christina Warinner is an expert on ancient diets.
Dr. Warinner has excavated around the world, from the Maya jungles of Belize to the Himalayan mountains of Nepal, and she is pioneering the biomolecular investigation of archaeological dental calculus (tartar) to study long-term trends in human health and diet.0 -
cliffs for the lazySo while there remains little doubt that many modern humans eat too much sugar and processed foods, these studies show that identifying a particular “paleo” diet is impossible. Researchers are just beginning to understand what ancient humans ate, and these recent studies show that grasses and grains have been part of the human diet for millions of years.0
-
My diet is grain-free, and I eat way too much sugar and dairy to be allowed in the Paleo club. How about we stop trying to label everything?0
-
Venturing into grass lands and eating some grass as opposed to living in the canopy 24/7 is not quite the same thing as harvesting, grinding and storing grain for a good part of our caloric needs during food shortages, which early hominids either foraged or starved. We looked like apes, acted like apes, defecating while being chased back into the trees to chew on twigs, ants and blossoms. Basically we probably ate as much grass/grain 2 and 1/2 million years ago as apes do today. I don't support paleo, but it's a weak argument and seems desperate trying to make a point, that isn't really in context anyway.0

this is mostly true. However, it's not the point of the article.
all the article is doing is highlighting evidence of what early man actually did include in his/her diet across populations (and it varied).
The OP is not about attacking any particular diet (eg paleo). There is nothing wrong with that diet or any other if one chooses to eat that way.
In fact, where food intolerances and allergies are present, you have to exclude food items that cause reactions (I have fructose/fructan intolerance and an intolerance to sugar polyols as an example).
But it does highlight that we should not be justifying the exclusion of entire food groups on the basis of misinformation.
The question of HOW we cultivate and harvest grain today or ANY type of whole foods (Monsanto anyone??? hmmm) compared with historically is a different question and debate and is not the subject of the article, obviously. Ditto the potential overexposure we have to certain foods in the modern diet (particularly processed foods that include eg wheat and/or soy in less than ideal form).0 -

If you are saying that cultured milk products are okay, that is not true. At least not according to any description of the Paleo diet I've ever seen.

I don't follow any of those websites and my doctor who is very well versed in the Paleo lifestyle (registered on the Paleo Physicians Network) says that RAW dairy (not from a grocery store) is ok if your individual body is tolerant to it. There are a lot of people that aren't tolerant to dairy, but some people have found that they can have raw dairy, but not commercial dairy.
I get raw dairy from a local family farm where the cows are grass fed. I also get my beef and pork from this same family farm.
For me, it is a good way to get fat in as grass fed meats tend to be on the leaner side. I don't eat much, but I do have some. I have learned to make raw milk cheese, butter yogurt, kefir and other products from the raw milk I do get. I also made some home made ice cream last weekend after I picked strawberries.
The Paleo lifestyle is merely a TEMPLATE made up of a lot more than just food. The lifestyle is one that includes every aspect of your life to be at your optimum health0 -

Hah, okay. This is actually fairly typical of people who claim to follow the Paleo diet: it usually goes something like, "I eat Paleo, except I allow myself to eat forbidden food X." Believe me, I do not blame you--any omnivore who tries to follow a diet with arbitrary restrictions against tasty and nutritious foods is going to start cracking up eventually.
But you have to see that your diet as you describe it is not "paleo"--the idea behind paleo is that you eat foods of the sort that would be available to hunters and gatherers who did not have any domesticated cattle. Whether that's a sensible or attainable plan is a different topic altogether.0 -

You can laugh and whatever. I will not argue with you, it is not worth my time or the negative energy caused by it. Think what you will, but I have studied this lifestyle and dabbled in it long before I committed to it completely.
What I do follow is the Paleo LIFESTYLE. That includes my social habits, eating habits, sleeping patterns, and exercise habits.
I do hunt and gather some of my food to include well hunting and fishing for meats, gathering wild blackberries, honeysuckle and other edible wild plants. Most other stuff comes from my CSA membership.
The whole premise is to eliminate the foods that lead and / or cause inflammation in the body. For some people dairy is included in that list............others it is NOT.
I never once stated that I follow paleo, but allow myself XXX forbidden food. RAW, grass fed dairy is allowed as I mentioned several times as long as the individuals body is tolerant to it.
You will never find me buying any dairy from a grocery store.
As I mentioned, it is a template to find what works for oneself.0 -

Okay, let me paraphrase what we've been saying.
OP: Paleo diet is not really paleo, perhaps more accurate to describe it as grain free.
Me: They also exclude other foods such as dairy and legumes.
PaleoPath4Lyfe: Not raw dairy.

Okay, so you are saying that the Paleo diet only excludes dairy by *my* definition? Can you please describe the diet for me as you understand it, because from everything I have read about it, dairy is not supposed to be consumed as part of a Paleo diet. It seems that you and PaleoPath4Lyfe are proposing to define Paleo using curiously private criteria. Again, this is not all that surprising, but I sincerely want to understand what you are talking about. If I use PP4L's definition, I can follow the diet as long as the foods I eat do not cause inflammation for me. Does this mean that I can go on eating grains, dairy, legumes, meat, and vegetables and consider my diet Paleo? I'm not experiencing any inflammation, so what am I missing?0 -

You'll have to forgive me, I'm not a Paleo dieter. I was confusing Primal (allows raw dairy) with Paleo (does not allow dairy). What I should have said was that PaleoPath4Lyfe was following a Primal diet, which is just Paleo with raw dairy. I honestly thought they both were Paleo when they are not, they are both different.
