As an occasional meal replacement when you're in a hurry? Sure. I wouldn't depend on them daily to create the deficit for you. If you do that your aren't learning about portion control and how to make this a sustainable life change.

A high-quality protein powder can be a good meal substitute, especially when mixed with fruit and a little peanut butter. Some people will use ff milk to mix with. I use water. I have them 2-3 times a week.
  • I swapped out breakfast for my meal-replacement shake. I buy it at the gym (for now). I make it with 8 oz of 1% milk, ice, 2 scoops of the chocolate powder and 1 tbsp of olive oil (you don't even taste it). The shake is yummy and it holds me over well until lunch. It bumps up the amount of protein that I get in a day. For me, it's working -- and it's one less meal that I need to actually "think" about.

I too use a protein meal replacement shake, either soy or plant based(both around 16g of protein 130cal per serving), for my breakfast. I did find already made shakes near me that have 20g protein plus other vitamins and miners and they are a coconut water type so I use them too when I get out to get them, but they are sold at an international produce store.

When starting my diet at the first of the year I wanted a way to gain control over my bad eating habits. After about 2-3 weeks of replacing breakfast, having 4oz of Plain Greek Yogurt(good amount of protein) with 2oz of frozen fruit as a snack between breakfast and lunch(You can buy a greek yogurt that is low cal already made) I was able to overcome the random eating habits and have sustained a set eating schedule. For me, it has worked. I still continue to use the protein shake and yogurt method... I will say I went with protein shake mixes that have other vitamins and minerals in them, and not just a basic protein shake.

First two weeks was a bit hard, I was used to eating early in the morning. I find that if I eat something solid in the morning, I tend to have more food cravings throughout the day than I do with the protein shake. Now a month and a week later, I don't even think about food or feel hungry usually until 9-10 am, and I get up at 2am for work. I always keep a low cal item with me though, incase I do get hungry, so I dont end up overeating later on in the day at dinnertime.

What may work for me and others who do the same may not for you. All I can say is try it and see how it works.

Oh a side note. I do use water with my protein shakes but I did find out if I added 1/8c of quick 1 min oatmeal to my shake and let it sit for a bit so the oatmeal swells a little, it really helped with appetite control. Not to mention it only added 36 cal to my shake so it was well worth it while I overcame the hurdle of control. I did that for 2 weeks or so and now I just drink the protein shake without it, don't need the extra filler from the oatmeal.

My profile is open so you can kinda slide through my breakfast and see what I use and kinda go from there. I haven't used the soy since I started, I ran out and had two tubs of the plant based but I did find at an international store near me they sell a coconut water brand that is protein packed (20g protein)with 21 other vitamins and minerals and for a buck each, it's a fast easy pack.

It works well for me so I do it. I use a plant based protein powder with other vitamins/minerals in it so that has a good ratio of protein/carbs/fats. I use almond milk and a banana with a chocolate flavored powder. It works really well for me and it gets me out of the door faster and hold me over until lunch. I probably won't do it forever, but I honestly think it tastes great (like a chocolate/banana shake so I get my chocolate fix in) and it keeps me full. Plus it helps me get my protein in. I do all I can to make sure my other meals/snacks are healthy choices that help target my macros.

Thanks all for ya comments it has helped me understand more. I do try to keep a high protein low-ish carb diet as kewierschke2 I get up at daft o'clock some days too early to eat. Plenty for me to absorb and maybe the ready made is good to look at as most protein mixes are only available in large tubs ( any manufactures reading do samples lol) will report back soon
