Does HIIT help prepare for track season?

So track season is coming.. I have been for the last fivemonths been training with Insanity The Asylum Volume 1 & 2, some P90X3, and right now I'm almost finished with Insanity Max:30.. Max:30 is extreme HIIT and definitely very intense.. On the weekends I sometimes go back and do Insanity The Asylum videos and I've noticed they are so much easier then they were before when I didn't do Insanity Max:30.. So I was wondering does high intense interval training help prepare for track season? I do long distance when I compete and I really want to be prepared for the season..(there is a mixture of strength and cardio in the videos) thanks :)

HIIT, particularly Tabata style, has been shown to improve aerobic and anaerobic processes in the body and increase your VO2 Max. This can be benefical in all manner of sustained aerobic activity.

Don't you already do sprint intervals?

    Surely it's a given...

If you compete long distance, you need to be running long distance. Adding interval-y training to the mix is a Good Thing - but you have to put in the miles first.

Track long distance is a whole different beast to long distance though. A good 10000m performance needs a solid volume of speedwork as well as getting the miles in.

Mind you, that's speedwork not prancing around in front of a DVD
