Does anyone ever feel there is no rhyme or reason for weight loss?

I'm pretty consistent when it comes to food and exercise. One week I'll lose a pound and a half, the next week I gain 1, the following week I lose 2, etc.... I really wish I could pinpoint something that could help with a consistent losing streak, but wouldn't we all! I know there are body fluctuations, water, hormones, etc... but it's frustrating to see a gain when you stayed under your calorie goal.
I'm glad my overall trend is downward and I'm losing for the most part but I want it to happen faster, especially when I have so much weight to lose. I know it I didn't gain it overnight but why is weight loss so darn slow?! (That's a rhetorical question )

Weight loss is definitely not linear. Water weight, poop, and other factors will cause our weight to fluctuate all the time. As long as you have a long-term downward trend, there is no need to worry or be discouraged. Just keep up the good work, and take comfort in knowing that you are doing something great for yourself!0

Do you weigh your food and make double sure of the accuracy of the nutrition info?
Do you have a spike in sodium intake the times you lose less? Do you stay consistently hydrated?
Do you weigh yourself on the same scale at the same time of day under the exact same conditions? (I.e. first thing in the a.m. after you go to the bathroom and before you get dressed?)

Weigh yourself every day at the same time (morning, post bathroom) and log it. Then, after a few weeks, look at the trend. It's going to jump all over the place but overall, it will go down. You can start to see particular patterns too. On Sunday/Monday my weight is up a little because I eat more sodium on weekends. My weight is lower 2-3 days after heavy cardio.
If you want it to happen faster, you can create a larger deficit, to a point. Since you have over 150 lbs to go, you could probably be losing 2-3 lbs a week.0 -

Since you already know why, I hope your venting helped you to feel better!
No one really talks about it but patience is a HUGE factor in weight loss. Also, stop focusing on just the number on the scale. Take body measurements, pay attention to how your clothes fit, pay attention to how your health changes (better mobility, test results, etc) as you go through this process. Your weight is not the only measure of success!
P.S. Something I did when I first started and had a less than satisfying weigh in was to take an average. I see you've lost 22 pounds. Not sure how long you've been at it but divide that by the number of weeks since you started and that's your average. Anything between 1 and 2 pounds is great!0 -
Yes, you just have to be patient. Two weeks ago, I just barely hit 135lbs. Then for the next 10 days, my weight creeped up to 140lbs. Then it started dropping about .8-1lb a day so that now today I am back at 136. I am sure in the next 2-4 days it will probably drop to 134. I have lost a huge amount of weight and this kind of annoying noise is 100% NORMAL unfortunately.
Water weight sucks, but you need to stay the course and stick to the number of calories you have allotted for the day and the weight will come off. Patience, honesty, and perseverance are the only ways to succeed in the weight loss game.0 -

We are all different. I really feel like people oversimplify things in this forum- we are all individuals with different bodies, lives, lifestyles, goals, abilities. So we all experience and perceive change at different rates.
Keep in mind the society we live in is geared towards consumption- more, more more, with excess included even where it doesn't need to be. I'm sure many of us who have started tracking have been shocked when you realize how much is in some foods.
Don't stress and just keep working toward whatever your goal is. This isn't really necessarily advice but I find that slow weight loss means more sustainable weight loss, because it's still about us living life rather than suddenly dropping calories, social engagements etc, so sometimes slower is the way to go.0 -
I have IBS. In the past I've gained and lost up to 8 pounds in 8 hours. I can lose 4 pounds and gain three inches around my waist in a day, or vice versa.
At some point you just have to laugh at it.
I'm not holding out for a world where weight loss happens faster, though. I'm holding out for a world where as soon as you decide you want to be X weight, you are that weight with ideal proportions. Dream big or go home!0
