Changing what shows up on the sidebar?

Is there any way to change what's on my homepage's sidebar? I don't read blog posts or care about every new thread that comes up; I'd much rather see things like threads I've starred and activity from groups I'm in. Is there a way I can do that?

the only way I know you can change it is on the blue bar above where you type it says news feed, at the other end it says view, change that to summary, instead of all updates, it then just shows your friends posts, but that's... Hope that helps a bit0
