It can if it helps you maintain you calorie deficit and keeps you satisfied.
But there is nothing special about having the shake itself. I find oatmeal more filling, but lately I've been skipping breakfast altogether.0 -
I couldn't think of anything worse than drinking my breakfast when there's a whole world of wonderful foods out there.0

NO. A protein shake helps to get additional protein when you are lacking it in your diet. A caloric deficit helps weight loss. Personally, I don't like to drink my calories.0

It helps you get more protein. If at the end of the day, you're still eating over your maintenance calories-it doesn't matter what you ate for breakfast. You won't lose weight.0

It's best to eat solid food to give your stomach time to digest and train your metabolism. Protein shakes are generally not healthy with lots of ingredients you've never even heard of. Best to stick to natural protein foods such as Greek yoghurt for breakfast with slices of fruit?0

I think you've read too many conflicting things and are confused about how the body actually processes food. You don't "train" your metabolism by eating, and even if that made sense, there is no difference in whether or not a food is solid or liquid in terms of nutrient value.
As for the original question, it's up to you! If you are drinking a shake for breakfast out of convenience, I would just recommend that you use a shake that is a blend of different proteins and not just whey. Whey protein is partially digested so that it can be rapidly absorbed, which is great for after your workouts but not so great at keeping you satisfied and full.
You can use a casein blend, or even just add fruit and/or nut butters to make it a bit more filling and slow down the rate of absorption.
As mentioned previously, fat loss does come from an overall calorie deficit, however whey protein has been proven to have additional benefits for fat loss and muscle protein synthesis and is a great addition to most anyone's diet.

The way I see it, I'm trying to educate myself to eat more healthily for the rest of my life. So, the changes that I make now are going to be sustainable ones.
I like food, so the idea of drinking it doesn't appeal. I plan on eating food for breakfast for ever, so I eat food for breakfast now.0 -

Can do, depends what's in it and what the rest of your diet consists of.0 -

You probably won't see a noticeable difference compared to having real food with the same amount of protein. Solid food tends to be more filling.

I drink my breakfast ... I like it. It is easy I can take it with me it is low calorie and keeps me full. I take it to work with me and drink it all morning sometimes. Do what you like. eating or drinking you breakfast is a personal choice0

I'll drink a shake for breakfast if I'm in a hurry or running late and don't have time to make something to eat. \Also, when I first started dieting, I didn't eat breakfast at all because I was never hungry in the morning. In an attempt to get three balanced (ish) meals in instead of 1-2 huge meals later in the day, for the first month or so I'd have a breakfast shake. Once I was used to stopping for something in the morning, that eventually expanded out into a few minutes to make some oatmeal and a glass of milk instead.
If you like the breakfast shakes, or don't have time to make something, go for it. They are no better nor no worse for you than solids for breakfast.0 -
I make a protein smoothie almost everyday for breakfast. It has cold cooked oatmeal, yogurt, fruit, protein powder, blah, blah, blah... It comes in at ~320 calories and helps me meet my other macros. The smoothie tastes great and is very filling but does nothing to help me lose weight, keeping my calories under 1900 helps me lose weight.0

A protein shake is just a supplement...it doesn't have any magical properties or anything.
Weight loss is simply a mathematical formula. A calorie is a unit of energy. Your body requires so much energy to maintain the status quo...energy (calories) is required for everything from merely existing to your daily hum drum to exercise.
When your energy consumption exceeds your body's requirements, that excess energy is stored as body fat. When your consumption is less than what your body requires, your body will dip into energy reserves to make up the difference...thus you burn fat (stored energy) and lose weight.
It's that simple...you can let all of the other nonsense and noise fall by the wayside. It's simply 5th grade math.0 -
I do either a protein shake or smoothie for breakfast, I just don't like breakfast. Eating 6 small meals a day is suppose to better for your metabolism so rather than skipping breakfast all together I prefer to drink mine, not because of the protein aiding in weight loss but because of the help it gives to my metabolism to just have something for breakfast0

No. For weight loss, 300 calories of food and 300 calories of protein shake are the same.
Eating less calories than you burn is what leads to weight loss.0 -
Thank U very much guys0

I drink a protein shake with casein in it. Casein is a slow digesting protein so it keeps you full longer. One scoop is 120 calories and I mix it with 1 cup of almond milk. So 180 all in. If you can I always mix in a blender with ice to make it cold and thick0
